What UPF 30 and UPF 50 actually mean on a golf shirt
The number on the label describes the cloth, not your afternoon. What it measures, what the two bands mean in the words of the body that sets them, the two everyday things that cut it, and where its usefulness stops.

What UPF actually measures
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, UPF is a measurement of how much ultraviolet radiation a fabric allows to pass through. The test is done on dry, unstretched material. A UPF figure is not a grade for style, but it is a ratio. UPF 50, for example, lets one fiftieth of the sun's ultraviolet A and B through, which is about two percent of the incident ultraviolet. The number on a label tells you how much light would get to the skin beneath the cloth under laboratory conditions.
The phrase "under laboratory conditions" is important, because The Skin Cancer Foundation makes clear that real life can change that number. Fabric that is stretched, damp, or worn thin will not perform the same way it did in a controlled test. The tests measure transmittance through a static piece of cloth rather than a shirt on a body during a round of golf on a breezy afternoon. A UPF figure is useful as a comparison of fabrics, but it is not a promise about every situation you will encounter on the course.
You will often scan a label and read a number as if it were a grade, and people treat UPF like a score in a tournament. That is not wrong, but remember what the number measures, because it measures the fraction of ultraviolet that passes through a dry, unstretched sample. If you want the specific language the Foundation uses, consult their guidance. For practical wear, keep the measurement in context, because the fabric, the fit, the weather. Labels and the two protection bands
The Skin Cancer Foundation describes two protection bands in plain terms, and their wording is specific. Fabrics rated 30 to 49 provide "very good protection", while fabrics rated 50 and above are what the Skin Cancer Foundation calls "excellent". The Foundation also says a fabric must reach 50 to carry its Seal of Recommendation. Those are the thresholds that matter if you are using the Foundation's language to assess a piece of clothing.

When wetness changes the numbers
The Skin Cancer Foundation gives a clear, practical example about wet fabric. A white T-shirt that measures about UPF 7 when dry can fall to about UPF 3 when wet which is a warning about a common situation. Think about the ninth hole in August, when sweat, spilled water, and sudden rain can leave a polo damp. If a shirt becomes wet, its measured UPF can drop enough that the number on the tag no longer reflects the protection you get while wearing it.
Wetness affects the yarns and the spaces between them. Fibres cling together differently when damp and that can change the way ultraviolet travels through the cloth. The Foundation points to that effect as a reason to regard a UPF number as conditional. A fabric that performs well when dry may perform much worse when soaked. While lightweight cotton shirts are especially vulnerable in the Foundation's examples the principle applies across many materials.
On the course you notice wetness in other ways. A damp shirt will also cling and may stretch across a shoulder or chest and that combination of moisture and tension can reduce protection more than either factor alone. The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests paying attention to garment composition and behaviour in real weather. A label that reads UPF 30 gives a laboratory snapshot that in the heat of a summer round can change. Keep the example in mind when you choose fabrics for long, humid days outside.
Stretch, fit, and why cut matters
The Skin Cancer Foundation highlights another simple physical effect, when cloth is pulled tight over the body it opens the weave and that allows more ultraviolet to pass through which links directly to how a shirt is cut and how it fits. A size too small, a trim athletic cut, or a sleeve that rides up when you swing will change the fabric's performance.
Think about the shoulder seam where a polo meets the sleeve. When you reach for a shot and your arm stretches the fabric spreads across a curved surface and the tiny holes between threads enlarge so the UPF figure measured on an unstretched swatch no longer applies. The same rule affects torso fit, and a body-hugging shirt will behave differently from a roomier one even if the material and weave are identical.
That practical consequence makes fit a protective consideration, and the American Academy of Dermatology places covering skin at the top of its sun protection advice. A looser cut that covers more skin can perform better than a tight shirt with a higher laboratory UPF. Selecting a fit that allows movement without excessive tension reduces the chance that fabric will be stretched into a weaker state.
Sizing matters too, so if you are between sizes and prefer more coverage choosing a slightly larger cut will reduce fabric tension when you move. Designers and shoppers should treat fit as part of the protective equation. The fabric's UPF number is one variable and how that fabric sits on your body is another. Both shape the protection a golf shirt gives you over a round.
Where UPF numbers stop and other choices begin
A UPF rating only describes the material that covers skin. The American Academy of Dermatology makes that priority plain by putting covering skin first when discussing protection from the sun. A shirt protects what it covers, but it does not protect exposed areas like the face, hands, lower arms if the sleeves are short, or any gap between collar and jaw. Say that plainly, because a garment's number does not extend beyond the cloth.
That boundary is the most important limitation of a UPF figure. Labels do not account for the uncovered parts of your body and neither do they describe how you use other measures of protection. The Skin Cancer Foundation and the American Academy of Dermatology both stress that clothing is one element among many. Where UPF stops hats, sunglasses, shade, and choices about exposure begin. Those organisations give guidance on combining all of them.
